“And oh, my dear Timothy, guard the treasure you were given! Guard it with your life. Avoid the talk-show religion and the practiced confusion of the so-called experts. People caught up in a lot of talk can miss the whole point of faith. Overwhelming grace keep you!” 1 Timothy 6:20-21
I struggle with TV evangelists and preachers who attract thousands of people in huge auditoriums filled, possibly with many “baby Christians” and who are willing to listen to anything preached from a pulpit. Apostle Paul told Timothy he had been given and treasure—protect it and avoid getting caught up in show-style practices that cause people to go astray.
One TV personality preaches in a former coliseum to thousands every Sunday. He’s referred to as the “feel good” minister. He avoids speaking on the topic of sin because he believes it is more affective to preach an uplifting message from the “Good News.”
The “Good News” is the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have yet to see a Bible where the topic of sin is blacked out. Sin is real. Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sinful way–not to make us happy.
Unfortunately, a “feel good” sermon will hold you for a day or two, then reality hits and life returns to its normal ups and down for which we need to hear the truth–that there is hope in Jesus Christ.
Lord, prepare us for the real life—one that is full of feeling good after repenting our sins. Amen.
