“Jezebel said, ‘Is this any way for a king of Israel to act? Aren’t you the boss? On your feet! Eat! Cheer up! I’ll take care of this; I’ll get the vineyard of this Naboth the Jezreelite for you.’ ” 1 Kings 21:7
Who was the woman behind Ahab, the king of Israel? Ahab presented himself as a moody, weak man, who would bury his head in his pillow, refuse to eat, and sulk when he didn’t get his way. His wife, Jezebel, in one instance, challenged a neighbor who refused to sell her husband the vineyard next to his property and caused the neighbor to be murdered. Eventually, her whole family suffered horrendous deaths for her evil ways.
The phrase “Behind every great man is a good woman” began during the 1960/70s feminist movement. Many great men have contributed their success to the strength of their wives. However, a good wife does not cheat or lie to make her husband successful.
I was a good wife for fifty years. I honored my husband and gave him the position of head of the household. But I must admit my husband was not a planner. Sometimes I pushed too hard and had to admit I was wrong.
In Proverbs 31, Solomon writes about the “woman behind the man:”
“A good woman is hard to find,
and worth far more than diamonds.
Her husband trusts her without reserve,
and never has reason to regret it.”
Lord, help us never to lead someone astray for our own benefit. Amen.
