Are you stuck?

[Jeremiah said] “Listen. Listen carefully: Don’t stay stuck in your ways!
It’s God’s Message we’re dealing with here.
Let your lives glow bright before God
before he turns out the lights,
Before you trip and fall
on the dark mountain paths. Jeremiah 13:15

ledIn our retirement community, old signage in front of the seven recreation centers and many churches have been replaced with huge, costly digital signs. In a small way, our fifty-year-old village looks a bit like a mini Las Vegas. However, many of the residents complain, “We don’t need these signs.” “People will get into accidents trying to read them while driving.” “I think they are an eyesore.”

I’m a gadget gal and happen to love anything that flashes in front of me—huge flat-screen TVs, my iPhone, and iPad, to name a few. The people who are stuck in the early days of Sun City do not realize that by not keeping up with the electronic world, we are dating our community, which is unattractive to the Baby Boomers who someday will be buying their homes.

In Jeremiah 13, Jeremiah told the Judeans to get unstuck from their reckless, lawless lives not to ruin their chances for salvation. Even today, we need to be reminded that it takes more than neon and digital signage to light up our lives and open our yes to the path to eternal life.

Lord, I thank you for glorious ways to communicate and celebrate with you. Amen.
