[Peter said] “Change your life. Turn to God and be baptized.” Acts 2:38
I became a child of God at four-months of age. As the pastor sprinkled my head with water, he said, “Linda Christine Sampson, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.” (Lutheran Book of Worship, Holy Baptism, p. 121)
One day, a troubled young man living with us told me he wanted to be baptized, but was not wanting a formal service. My friend Pat told me she had baptized many people, so I called her. She drove out to our place, and after getting acquainted with Dave, she prayed, and with words similar to the ones used at my baptism, she then poured living water on this young man’s head. At that moment, one could see his eyes change from fear to hope.
We lost contact with Dave a few years later, and I don’t know if he continued to follow in the path of Jesus. I know God hasn’t lost contact with him, as he promises the mark of Christ will stay with us forever.
Lord, may we call upon our baptism for strength. Amen.
