I’m just happy with little as with much, with much as with little.” Philippians 4:11 (The Message Bible)
There are whole books written on the topic of happiness. I’m reading a book titled “Yearnings—Embracing the Sacred Messiness of Life” by Irwin Kula. [Hyperion 2006]. Rabi Kula says, “If we’re only happy when everything works out, happiness will always elude us, and our experience of reality will be so much narrower.”
Paul understood happiness, as he relates in his letter to the Philippians. He was in prison for teaching and preaching about Jesus, but the bars and walls didn’t stop curious people from learning about his ministry. His letters went out, and for him, life continued.
With all the things we have in life, we continue to lock ourselves behind doors of our own prison, such as fear of the unknown. We bleed ourselves from moments of happiness that surround us with every breath we take. Such a shame.
Remind us, dear Lord, that no one or no one thing can make us happy. Amen.
