“Teacher, is it nothing to you that we’re going down? … Jesus reprimanded the disciples: “Why are you such cowards? Don’t you have any faith at all?” Mark 38,40 (The Message Bible)
Years ago, I had a boss who seemed oblivious to anything going on in the office. Occasionally, he’d come up with a half smile, but would return to the frown-face that I remember. I always wondered if he liked his job. One day he asked me to come into his office and said, “You act like you don’t care!” I couldn’t believe what he was saying. I’ve been accused of many things, but not caring is not one of them. I give 105 percent when I believe in what I am doing—especially in a ministry setting.
In this story in Mark, the disciples said the same thing to Jesus—don’t you care that we are about to be dumped into the sea? His answer turned the questions back to them; Don’t you have any faith at all?”
It was faith in what I could do for the office that kept me from handing in my resignation. In the end, my boss handed in his…and his career, because he had lost faith in himself.
Dear Lord, when the wind blows and the sea shakes us in our shoes, help us look to you for strength. Amen.
