“If the voice calls again, say, ‘Speak, God. I’m your servant, ready to listen.’” 1 Samuel 3:9 (The Message Bible)
Today’s verse is referring to Samuel, whom as a child, heard a call in the night, “Samuel, Samuel.” He went to Eli (his caretaker) who told him to go back to bed. But after Samuel’s third time visit, Eli realized it was God calling the child and said the next time he heard his name, he should said, “Speak. I’m your servant, ready to listen.” Samuel had been called as a prophet. His first vision was to tell Eli that his family (who had forsaken God) couldn’t be saved by sacrifice or offering—a big task for a young boy.
I use the phrase, “I’ve been called” when referring to my ministry “Souly-4-You.” I feel called to write inspirational books and to do retreats for my fellow brothers and sisters who work in the church office. My ears didn’t hear the call. It came from the heart and beats like a drum telling me to go and share. That’s a pretty big task for a woman about to retire and go out on a ministry trip!
Dear Lord, quiet my heart, mind, and soul so that I will hear you call my name. Amen.
