“As obedient children, let yourselves be pulled into a way of life shaped by God ….” 1 Peter 16
During a visit with my three brothers, we sat around chatting about the “good old days” as kids on the farm. One instance I vividly remember was when I was about 4. My older brothers were 5 and 6. Innocently, I tagged along with them as they took a box of stick matches to the outhouse and turned pages from an old Sears catalogue into a flash of fire before dropping them into one of the two holes. Upon discovering our pyromaniac ways, Mother scheduled spankings for us to be administered by my father when he came in from the field.
At the end of a story-telling session, my mother said, “It’s by the grace of God you made it to adulthood.”
Peter says in verse 17, “You call out to God for help and he helps–he’s a good Father that way. But don’t forget, he’s also a responsible Father and won’t let you get away with sloppy living.”
Dear Lord, may the bread and wine broken and shared during Holy Communion remind me I am spared the punishing hand of my Heavenly Father. Amen.
