“You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone.” Ephesians 2:19-20 (The Message Bible)
In the bulletin, I read the announcement, “Immediately following worship, all are welcome to coffee fellowship.” We found the fellowship hall and fell into line with other people grabbing cookies and coffee and taking them to a sea of white round banquet tables. Winding around the tables, we looked for two empty seats or someone to give us a friendly nod, “Join us.”
Deep in the back of the room, we found an empty table, sat down alone and silently ate our cookies, draining our Styrofoam cups. As we headed for the door, I said to Glen, “We could have done that at home,” and he agreed.
Church is about more than worshiping and praising God. It’s about spending time with the family of believers. Why would I go back to that church? Worship services on TV give me more of a welcoming feeling than I felt at that church, and a phone number scrolls across the screen for prayer requests…and where to send a donation.
Dear Lord, help us reach out to those looking to fit in at church. Amen.
