“Lady Wisdom has built and furnished her home; it’s supported by seven hewn timbers. The banquet meal is ready to be served; lamb roasted, wine poured out, table set with silver and flowers.” Proverbs 9:1,2
Lady Wisdom is having a dinner party. Did you get your invitation? In verse 3, she goes to town, stands in a prominent place, and invites anyone who can hear her voice to come to her party. Apparently, she is a therapist who wants the guests to come and to leave behind the confusion in their life.
When I present a retreat for church support staff, often I begin the weekend with a skit about emptying my “bag” of dead weight. I reach into a bag and take out a rock, which represents the heaven burden of responsibility I don’t need to worry about over the weekend. Then I pull out a file folders filled with paper that can wait for another day, and use other symbols of stress we carry through the day.
Lady Wisdom wants us to come to a banquet with Jesus as our host. Give him the burdens of your life and let him welcome you to a meal of peace, joy, and love.
Today is my birthday and I am throwing a party–not a banquet, but a soup supper with a crazy bingo game to follow. No Lady Wisdom hosting this party, just a woman filled with love, peace, and joy.
Come, Jesus says, and be my guest at the banquet I’m reserving for you! Amen
