[Jeremiah said] “So any prophet who preaches that everything is just fine and there’s nothing to worry about stands out like a sore thumb.” Jeremiah 28:8
Does your pastor preach the “Feel Good” gospel? You know the type–“just think happy thoughts.” Believe me, when my marriage was “going South” and my mother told me, “Think happy thoughts,” there was little comfort in those words. I wanted her to give me advice on how to get to where I could think happy thoughts beyond, “Yes, Mom, when the divorce papers are signed, that’s when I’ll be able to think happy thoughts.
When in the depth of despair, loneliness, grief, etc., will the “Feel Good” message proclaimed on Sunday sustain through the rest of the week? Jesus preached the message of messiness, pain, frustration, and in the end: HOPE. I need to read and hear the gospel proclaimed by Jesus and his disciples, plus Paul and other apostles.
Dear Lord, when I’m down, I need to be told: “Life is tough! Put your big girl panties on and deal with it.” Amen.
