Don’t hit the wall …

Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. Matthew 11:28

One of my favorite topics I speak on at conferences is “Who Takes Care of You?” I developed this speech after working with church secretaries and discovering a common theme of being exhausted. I’ve adapted the program for pastors’’ wives and Stephen Minister caregivers,  Perhaps you can relate to being exhausted as a mother, father, spouse, caregiver of an elderly parent, dependent child, or being a workaholic.

I give the participants a  paper heart to illustrate what damage we do to our bodies when we fail to take care of it. I ask questions about nutrition, sleep patterns, exercise, and their emotional and spiritual being. Each time the answer is negative, the participant puts a crease in their paper heart. When finished, they can see how many folds they’ve put into their hearts and identify ways in which they may be harming their body.

Jesus set an example of resting the body, mind, and soul. Everyone knows when he or she hits the wall and is completely exhausted. The trick is to figure out how to rest before hitting the wall.

Lord, help us to rest before we become exhausted. Amen.
