“God’s kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom…The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil. The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps.” Matthew 25:1-2 (The Message Bible)
Today, “silly virgins” might be called “dumb blonds”—our thoughtless and nasty way of branding someone who does something stupid, such as the “silly virgins” in today’s scripture. While waiting for the bridegroom, who arrived late, the oil in the five “silly virgins” lamps ran out. As they ran off to buy more oil, the bridegroom arrived, and were locked out of the wedding banquet. Through the door, the bridegroom warned them, “Stay alert—you have no idea when he [the Son of God] might arrive.”
Just for fun, I took a blond joke and turned it into a silver-fox joke (that would be me.) An old silver fox asked someone what time it was, and they told her it was 4:45. The silver fox, with a puzzled look on her face replied, “You know, it’s the weirdest thing, I have been asking that question all day, and each time I get a different answer.”
No matter what color hair we have, we all have moments that make us look silly.
Dear Lord, give us a big dose of laughter, grace, and another chance to fill our lamps with enough oil to get us to all of the wedding feasts in our lives. Amen.
