Dying Gracefully — Daily Meditation Moment

December 13

“Elijah said to Elisha [the one God appointed to be Elijah’s successor], ‘What can I do for you before I’ taken from you? 2 Kings 2:9 (The Message Bible)

Stu is dying. He’s my friend’s husband who has chosen to forego treatment for cancer that would only give him extra time, but not without side effects that would decrease his quality of life. He didn’t make this decision alone—he sought out advice from his wife and family. They agreed that Stu should do it his way. Now Stu is writing a blog and sharing the rest of his time on earth with others in an intimate way that will give others comfort and understanding of his “Last Voyage.” May God calm the stormy seas and give you smooth sailing through your voyage, Stu.

Stu’s spirit about life and death gives me hope for my own “end of life” that will come. I would be so blessed to be able to share life ending experiences as Stu is, and to have the support of my husband and children, as Stu has also. God surely is smiling on this family as Stu gives his family the gift of living until he dies.
Dear Lord, what would you have me pass on some day to those I leave behind? Amen.
