Eternal Light

February 18

“It started when God said, ‘Light up the darkness!’ and our lives filled up with light as we saw and understood God in the face of Christ, all bright and beautiful.” 2 Corinthians 4:6 (The Message Bible)

The sun had set while I shopped. As I pulled out onto a newly resurfaced asphalt street, the headlights on my car beamed on the white lane dividers. Everywhere around me there was darkness—almost a sense of “blackness,” and yet in front of me was a path that helped me find my way home.

During creation, God spoke: “Light!” and light appeared to separate the day from darkness. Long after creation, God commissioned John the Baptist to point the way to the “Life-Light”—Jesus. “The Life-Light was the real thing: Every person entering Life he brings into Light.” (John 1:9).

The hot Arizona climate is hard car batteries, and unfortunately, there is little warning of when a battery will fail. Should I find myself with a “check battery” symbol on the dash, instead of feeling frustrated while waiting for roadside assistance, I could thank God that the light of Jesus never goes out.

Lord of Life, thank you for lighting the path for our faith journey. Amen.
