Gifts handed out by the Spirit…

“All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people!” 1 Corinthians 12:11

Craig Hospital store room of equipment fitted for fun activities.

My youngest child, Susan, is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, currently studying for a PhD. in leisure studies to become a professor.

For the certification Susan interned at Craig Hospital in the Denver area and worked with spinal cord and brain injury patients. She felt blessed to help patients with temporary or permanent disabilities to have fun–to help them return to doing activities they enjoyed before their accident or illness.

I spent a few days observing Susan on the job at Craig Hospital. She evaluated patients to see what they could do for fun within their temporary or permanent disability. Some patients did crafts, baked and decorate cupcakes, and played games. I watched  patients, who couldn’t move their arms or legs, bowl because of an engineering feat (no doubt a gift from God). A portable lap ramp made it possible for an aid to place the ball on the ramp, and when the wheelchair stopped, the ball rolled off the ramp down to the lane. They bowled better than I do! Fun was written all over their faces.

Of the eight gifts mentioned in verse 28, Susan has been blessed many–teaching, healer, helper, and administrator. What are your God-given gifts from the Spirit?

Dear Lord, help those still seeking their Spiritual gift to recognize it when it appears. Amen.
