“I prayed for this child, and GOD gave me what I asked for. And now I have dedicated him to GOD. He’s dedicated to GOD for life.” 1 Samuel 1:28 (The Message)
Hannah wanted a baby, but never got pregnant. A woman, such as Hannah, wanting a child would go to all lengths and costs to have a baby. Fertility clinics thrive on the desperate desires of women to become pregnant. Someone who went through the arduous routine to become fertile and then successfully becoming pregnant would not understand the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel.
Hannah prayed that she could become pregnant – the only hope for a baby. God heard her prayers and gave her a baby. She was filled with joy and nursed Baby Samuel until he was weaned, and then took him to the temple to be raised. In the next chapter, Hannah prayed again, “I’m bursting with God-news! I’m walking on air. I’m laughing at my rivals. I’m dancing my salvation.”
These aren’t the words one would expect from a woman who prayed so hard to have a baby and then gave it up after intimately nursing the child until he was weaned and could live without his mother.
Hannah had faith that God gave her this child for his glory, not her glory. She celebrated in the glory of being chosen to give Samuel to God’s kingdom.
Dear God, please give me faith to trust in you and live for your glory. Amen.
