God the tough guy…

“God said to Moses, ‘Go down. Warn the people not to break through the barricades to get a look at God lest many of them die.'” Exodus 19:21

imageAll through the Old Testament God is threatening the people to obey or he’ll wipe them off the map. I am reminded of an old Bill Cosby routine in which he said something like this, “We should raise our kid to the age of 16, throw him away and start again.” Anyone who has raised a child can understand how this would make sense: We learn how to raise children on the job. I believe God was learning how to be God and that’s why he introduced the theory of tough love.

Move forward to the New Testament and see Jesus in action. This is God incarnate. Jesus shows us the love of God by his action and through his teaching. There were still many lessons be learned about living and loving when Jesus left the Earth. God, in his creative ability, sent the Holy Spirit to give us another chance to get things right.

Help us, God, to think of you as the forgiving, loving Father of Jesus and the sender of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
