“Do two people walk hand in hand if they aren’t going to the same place?” Amos 3:3 (The Message Bible)
Living in a senior community gives me a lot of pleasure watching elderly couples walking hand in hand. I often wonder, Have they always walked so intimately, or has their love grown into this sign of affection… or are they holding on to each other to keep from stumbling? It doesn’t matter—any or all of these thoughts still make the scene of the couple holding hands almost divine.
There were many years in Glen and my marriage when we didn’t grab on to each other’s hand while walking or sitting closely. I often thought he was embarrassed to show affection in public…or maybe it was awkward for him because I was taller.
Years ago, after a year of hellish marital therapy, I realized Glen and I never held hands because we were going in opposite directions in our relationship. I’m so glad that has changed.
Dear God, I am grateful that I can hold Glen’s hand and still have one free to hold your hand, too. Amen.
