“He set it all out before us in Christ, a long-range plan.” Ephesians 1: 10 (The Message Bible)
Today, as I prepare to go to a funeral for the husband of a good friend, my heart is heavy. I usually prefer to refer to the memorial service for the deceased as a “Celebration of Life,” but in some ways, “funeral” is a better choice of words. For my friend, there has been no celebrating for years—only worry, frustration, and care giving. I’m certain she is celebrating that her husband no longer suffers from the afflictions he experienced for years. My guess is that she is grieving for not only the loss of her husband, but also the loss of plans for the future and lost opportunities in the past.
When my friend entered into marriage, she probably had a vision of what her life would be like—we all do when making significant changes–but none of us are ever prepared for the ride we are going on—the curves, dead ends, the valleys, and mountains. However, because of a grace-filled God, there are smooth, freshly paved roads and beautiful scenery along the way that helps us hang on and move forward again.
Dear Lord, bless my friend as she begin a new chapter in her life—taking care of herself and making new long-range plans. Amen.
