“Do you think all God wants are sacrifices—empty rituals just for show? He wants you to listen to him!” 1 Samuel 15:22 (The Message Bible)
Saul’s reign as King of Israel was short lived. When given the task of wiping out King Agag and the Amalekites, plus all the animals, Saul took the opportunity to glorify himself by bringing King Agag home to show off his power—and a few prized steers for a barbeque to celebrate. He lost his throne and Samuel lost a friend.
We see this kind of behavior today—so unbecoming of people of influence, especially in those who make our laws and then break them.
I think of how I hold back offerings to God—the least I give is the coins from my change purse, which I toss into the jar at church to support the food pantry. There were times when I held back the quarters thinking how I might need them for a vending machine, and offer only the pennies, nickels and dimes. God wants more than that out of me.
Dear Lord, forgive me for holding back from giving what you want from me. Amen.
