“Unannounced, an angel of God appeared just to the right of the altar of incense. Zachariah was paralyzed in fear.” Luke 1:12
Zachariah stared fear in the face when an angel suddenly appeared. However, can you imagine the additional fear he must have experienced when the angel told him Elizabeth and he were going to become parents in their ripe old age? They gave birth to John the Baptist, who had a leading role in the life of Jesus.
I’ve joined a group at church called the JOY Project. We are seeking ways to help integrate intellectually disabled members in our congregation to become more active in worship and activities. Two guest speakers came to our formation meeting. Both had Down Syndrome children who are now adults. One speaker told her story about how devastated she was to learn that her daughter had Down’s. For years she felt the shame of her initial reaction to a child that has grown up to be quite independent.
The other mother had an opposite experience. When the doctor, with a sad expression on his face, told her that her son had Down’s, she said, “Why would having a child who is capable of giving me so much love be a problem?” Her child is college student and a national speaker!
Dear Lord, help us not to reject your gifts out of fear of the unknown. Amen.
