“Then he [Jesus] shouted, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ And he came out…” John 11:44
Lazarus became ill, and his sisters, Mary and Martha, summoned for Jesus to come and heal him. But Jesus went on with his business and showed up four days after Lazarus died. In deep grief, Martha greeted him by saying, “Master, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. (vs. 32).
How many times have we said, “If only I had ….” I’ve thought many times if only we had chosen to move to Arizona before we built our “retirement” home in rural Dixon, we could have paid cash for a house in Sun City. But we weren’t ready to live in a retirement village and never considered it.
Life is full of if only thoughts which give us insight for making choices and decisions in the future. However, Jesus turned Martha’s if only into praise and thanksgiving when he invited Lazarus to come out of his grave and live again.
Dear God, may if only moments become resurrections of how we can grow in our faith. Amen.
