“Why do bad people have it so good? Why do con artists make it big? …. Meanwhile, you know me inside and out. You don’t let me get by with a thing!” Jeremiah 12:1-2 (The Message Bible)
Today, people are still whining the same sentiment of lack of fairness—especially when paying taxes. One sees billionaires paying a lower tax rate than someone who has no mortgage and no children and squeaking out a decent wage. In the end, their reward is coughing up nearly 25 percent of their income to pay income tax. The tax code says it’s fair, but some things in life don’t feel fair.
Jeremiah had seen more than enough of the greed and disrespectful behavior in Judah and questioned God, “Why do they get by with it?” We question God when we can’t understand what is going on around us. When we don’t get an answer, it’s easier to give up and believe that God doesn’t care. However, I once heard a wise person say, “Why not me?” That’s what I call faith.
Dear Lord, forgive me when I whine about things not being fair. Amen.
