“You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church.” Matthew 16:18 (The Message Bible)
In the game show Jeopardy, a “question” under the category of “Son of Man,” might be, “Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” The contestant Peter would buzz in with the correct “answer”: Jesus.
How did Peter know that Jesus was the Messiah? There were no Kindles or iPad 2s to pull the answer from—he had been given insight through the writings from the prophets, had observed Jesus while teaching, preaching, and healing. However, the light shined in the soul of Jesus that gave Peter the answer. “You’re Christ.”
The next question in the “Jesus” category would be “The one Jesus appointed as “the rock.” Peter would be stunned when he heard the answer: “Who is Peter?” How much can a mind absorb in such a short amount of time? How much responsibility had Peter just been given? The answer came under the “double jeopardy $1200 question: “Denied knowing Jesus three times.” “Once again the answer was, “Who is Peter.”
Lord, if you were to call me a “rock,” please fill me with the power it would take to light up the world around me. Amen.
