“Everything was created through him [God]; nothing – not one thing – came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.” John 1:3-5 (The Message Bible)
The Christmas Eve service would not be the same without the lighting of the little candles everyone is given as they enter the church. After the communion service, ushers light their candles from the Christ candle, and row after row, the darkened church becomes alive in the spirit of Jesus’ birth. We sing “Silent Night, Holy Night.” No one wants the song to end or to be the first one to blow out their candle.
The light that comes from the birth of Jesus gives us hope. The joy that we take with us from worshiping the Savior accompanies us into the dark night, and the memories of Christ’s birth brightens our path.
May you feel God’s presence through the Christ child this Christmas and throughout the New Year.
Lord, may those living in darkness get a glimpse of hope through your eternal light. Amen.
