“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you are involved in various trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. But you must let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.” James 1:2-4
In the Message Bible, the above verse is a suggestion for how to respond wisely to life situations. Anyone who experiences loss of any kind can say that joy can be found within the painful times, such as when my husband died. My most profound joy came from knowing his suffering had ended and he died in peace.
Today millions of registered voters are going to the polls to cast their vote for candidates running for local, county, state, and national offices. Third party candidates for president and those running on lesser tickets than for the president and congress had to endure what is being called the craziest campaign ever. I wonder how they could they feel any joy in their efforts to be heard.
And, in regards to Hillary and Donald, how could either of them found joy in their long, painful campaigns. They’ve lived months of ugliness, lies, hateful reporting, and had their private lives publicly examined on a daily basis. Now, the campaigning is over and the results of the people’s voice through voting will bring joy to one candidate. The other will no doubt experience the lack of joy in their defeat.
Lord, give us endurance during trials to experience joy. Amen.
