Last minute supper guests …

“All we have are five loaves of bread and two fish…” Matthew 14:17

imageJesus arrived at a quiet place on a hillside to grieve the death of his cousin, John the Baptist. Soon people began to show up with people who needed to be healed. Jesus sprung into motion and worked until evening–supper time. His disciples were willing to send the people home, but Jesus said, “You give them food,” and took five loaves of bread and two fish and after blessing it, fed around 5,000 people.

I love this miracle story, because as the chief cook in our home, I understand the challenge it is to feed last-minute guests a decent meal. My mother told me when they lived on the farm, occasionally someone would stop by the house and ask for food. Mother would not let them into the house, but she would whip out a skillet, fry a couple of eggs, and make the hungry person a couple of sandwiches– enough to get help them move on to the next farmer’s house.

Lord, help us find a way to open our hearts and pantries to those in need. Amen.
