“God spoke: ‘Light!’ And light appeared.”’ Genesis 1:3 (The Message Bible)
When I awoke this morning, it was dark out, and I want to climb back under the covers and wait until the sun came out of hiding. That must have been how God felt, as author Eugene Peterson of “The Message” bible described God’s initial attempt at creation: “Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness.”
God was “depressed” in the darkness and made light, but in his wisdom, he knew that darkness is a necessary part of our life. We rest in the darkness and come alive again in the light. It is no wonder that people describe their bouts with depression as living in darkness.
The light that shines at the beginning of the day or at the end of a depressive tunnel is the eternal light that shines on us from God. It is my prayer today that you will be able to open the blinds to the window of your life and accept the Light.
Dear Lord, thank you for the gift of light. Amen.
