“When a man takes a new wife, he is not to go out with the army or be given any business or work duties. He gets one year off simply to be at home making his wife happy.” Deuteronomy 24:5
When I ran across this scripture, I wanted to believe every newly wed man should adhere to this guideline in the Bible. A year-long honeymoon–what a way to make his wife happy! However, in this world, it would be impractical. And, for men on a second, third, or more marriage, his boss might become suspicious of the intent to marry to get time off from work.
It an imaginary world, a year together without the stress of a job would be a wonderful opportunity for a couple to get acclimated to marriage. However, in today’s world, without work there is no money and that would be a new kind of stress for newlyweds. When I married, my husband was in the Navy and had to report to duty every day and we felt blessed to have a year together before he was shipped overseas for his final Pacific cruise.
With the way we live today with electronics and toys of all types, we can be under the same roof together but separated by heartless devices. There is no way something mechanical or electronic can help to couple bond.
Lord, help us spend quality time together with people we care about. Amen.
