” So many others have tried their hand at putting together a story of the wonderful harvest of Scripture and history that took place among us, using reports handed down by the original eyewitnesses who served this Word with their very lives.” Luke 1:1-2 (The Message Bible)
Today, we see shelves full of memoirs written by people—famous and unknown. The author picks a period in their life to write a memorandum of trials, tribulation, joy, love, frustration, or of a spiritual awakening or mystical moment to share with the whole world. As I think back on my sixty-six years, I can recall only one year that might be titillating enough to write about…but would I want to expose my crazy life to the whole world to read? [Perhaps to be published after I’m dead!]
If Mary, the mother of Jesus, were to write a memoir, my guess is that she would begin her story in Luke 1:22. As a young teen, Angel Gabriel visited her and said, “Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a surprise for you: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus.” And she replied, “But how? I’ve never slept with a man.” Now that would make for a good read!
Dear God, I am grateful for the people chosen to write the wonderful harvest of scripture in the Bible. Amen.
