And Mary said,
I’m bursting with God-news;
I’m dancing the song of my Savior God.
God took one good look at me, and look what happened—
I’m the most fortunate woman on earth!
Luke 1:46-48 (The Message Bible)
My third child was a surprise, unplanned event. I had gone back to work after being a stay-at-home mom and was ready to get out of the house and into the adult world. I began to have symptoms of being pregnant, and while at the clinic with my five-year old daughter, I took a pregnancy test. When the nurse called the next morning with the news, “Congratulations, Mrs. Gillis, you are pregnant,” there was no rejoicing. It took months before I could walk through the baby aisle in department stores without feeling nauseous.
Then God performed a miracle—a tumor on my thyroid gland! All of a sudden I had someone other than myself to worry about. Would the baby know her mommy? My pregnancy became the center of attention during the months of testing and the surgery the baby and I went through together. As the baby bump grew, I began to long for the infant to be in my arms.
The tumor was benign, but not my love for this baby, the precious gift God gave me—my Susan. Just like Mary, I became the most fortunate woman on earth!
Lord, we don’t always know what is good for us, but we trust that you do! Amen.
