“This time I’m writing out the plan in them, carving it on the lining of their hearts.” Hebrew 8:10
The Old Testament people didn’t get it. They did everything from worshiping false gods to ignoring God, and all he wanted was for them to accept him into their hearts. He finally figured it out–he needed to go to the people in the form of his son to awaken them to what he wanted of his people–not just loyalty and good works, but an open heart. Jesus spent his life telling the story of God’s love and how God wants his children to love him back. I grew up knowing Jesus and feeling as if he carved his name on my heart.
When younger I often wished I’d had a born-again experience of some kind where I’d awaken and feel “different.” I hear stories of someone being on top of a mountain and experience a new relationship with Jesus, or when there has been conflict in their lives, a breakthrough happened, and they saw the presence of Jesus or heard the voice of an angel. But I know God began to scribble on the lining of my heart the day I was baptized, beginning with Sunday school, Bible school, confirmation classes and Bible Study. God continues to write messages of love and encouragement on my heart.
Dear Lord, I look forward to the day when you will say, “Well done, my daughter, come home” and I arrive in Heaven. Amen.
