On Fire …

“No one throws cold water on a friendly bonfire.” Mark 2:20

imageIf you are hovering around a campfire toasting a hot dog or a marshmallow, you wouldn’t want someone to douse the flames. The scripture above refers to a good bonfire as a faith on fire.

If you’ve ever seen someone on fire for their standing on a street corner on fire ¬†holding a John 3:16 sign and shouting, “Repent and be baptized …,” how did that display make you feel?

Years ago, I visited Pat, a charismatic Christian friend, who could outtalk anyone about religion. ¬†One day when I visited her, she showed me the initials “NJW” carved into the wall next to the doorbell. She chuckled and said, “That’s code to tell missionaries that come to the door to move on.” She apparently had been quite effective in trying to convert previous missionaries to her way of thinking. I could picture a couple of young people backing toward to the door to escape Pat’s testimonials, especially if she flipped into speaking in tongues.

Help us, Lord, to be on fire about our faith, but not to offend anyone. Amen.
