“Good friend, follow your father’s good advice;
don’t wander off from your mother’s teachings.
Wrap yourself in them from head to foot;
wear them like a scarf around your neck.
Wherever you walk, they’ll guide you;
whenever you rest, they’ll guard you;
when you wake up, they’ll tell you what’s next.” Proverbs 6:20-22
I had two older brothers. The three of us were fourteen months apart in age and most often could be found together somewhere on the farm. One day mother noticed she hadn’t seen us for awhile and searched until she found us in the outhouse. I’m sure I was just an observer watching my brothers light a match from a box taken from the wash house, hold it to some toilet paper (or yellow pages from an old phone book), and toss it down into one of the two holes. Mother whisked us into the house and sent us to our rooms with a promise when dad came into the house, he’d spank each of us.
Waiting for punishment was almost as hard as the razor strap across the bottom. Now, I know when I’ve done something that deserves punishment. Guilt takes over and feels like a mental spanking by my Heavenly Father.
Dear Lord, give us a strong conscience to know when we have failed you. Amen.
