“They will go to war against the Lamb but the Lamb will defeat them…” Revelations 17:14 (The Message Bible)
Not Revelations again! Chapter 17 is even harder for me to understand than chapter 7. For this blog, I chose to dissect the one phrase that I understand. The Lamb: Jesus, the son of God; Proof that he is Lord over all lords: The resurrection; Called, chosen, and faithful: What I strive to be with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Much of the Bible, especially Revelations, is written in metaphors or with symbols, images and allusions. In part, Revelations resembles the writing style of J. K. Rowling, the billionaire author of the Harry Potter series that sold over 400 million copies. From what I’ve read about the series, the books were not written for the reader to accompany the hero on a moral journey or to experience ethical growth.
I didn’t read the series (perhaps I will some day), and if the books indeed lack the opportunity to make the reader more aware of his or her own moral consciousness, then perhaps bookstores could place copies of the “The Message Bible” on the same shelf as the Harry Potter series.
Dear Lord, thank you for stretching our faith muscles through the book of Revelations. Amen.
