Riding the Roughshod Pony — Daily Meditation Moment

“Because you run roughshod over the poor and take the bread right out of their mouths, you’re never going to move into the luxury homes you have built.” Amos 5:10 (The Message Bible)

Amos tells it like he sees it. In today’s message, this brave prophet picks on the rich, who exploit and abuse the poor, and they believed that God sanctioned their cause! In verse 12, Amos goes directly to the jugular vein: “You bully right-living people, taking bribes right and left and kicking the poor when they’re down.”

Amos wrote those words long before Jesus was born, and yet we continue to read or hear about the bullying or torturing of people of all age all over the world. In many cases, they do so in the name of their so-called “religion.” The God I know and trust doesn’t sanction anything that hurts another person, especially the ill, poor, and those who society labels as “misfits.”

Modern-day prophets have just as big a task as Amos did to try to educate the bullies of the world that they are not God.

Dear Lord, help me stand up to those who bully others. Amen.
