Scarred — A Meditation Moment

January 27

“This God of Grace, this God of Love. He gave food to those who fear him…” Psalm 111:4 (The Message Bible)

In Psalm 111, the Psalmist praises and thanks God for everything he has—“God’s works are so great, worth a lifetime of study—endless enjoyment!” Unless we stop and think about everything we have in our life, we can’t realize the magnitude of all the gifts God gives us.

God is often referred to as the “Bread of Life.” The bread is not just a slice of 12-grain bread, but is everything we need to live. One day last week in the parking lot of a “big box” store, I was approached by a young woman holding the hand of a little girl about five years old. She said, “I’m sorry to have to ask you, but can you help me? My daughter and I are sleeping in my ca,r which is out of gas, I just got out of the hospital after my husband hit me with a hammer (she showed me the scar on her forehead), and we are hungry…can you help us?” The deep scar made me a believer, and I reached into my wallet and gave her what I could—a five dollar bill.
Five dollars wouldn’t get her more than five minutes into all she needs to survive, and for the rest of the day, I had wished I could have wrapped her and her daughter in my arms, given them the spare bedroom in our home, fed them until their tummies were bulging, and put gas into the tank of her car to help her move on in life.

Lord, thank you for the opportunity to give someone hope—no matter how much or little I can offer. Amen.
