[Peter said] “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.” He said, Come ahead.” Matthew 14:28,29
But, having all that Peter exhibits as a disciple comes with consequences. One time after a night of healing the sick, Jesus took time away from the disciples and later took a stroll on the sea to where the boat full of disciples weathered out a storm. Perhaps Peter thought Jesus was being “cool” and wanted to look like the adventuresome one. He asked Jesus to help him walk on water.
Imagine the smug look on Peter’s face as he took a few steps on the water. But then he lost sight of faith in himself, and when he looked down, he began to sink into the cold water. Jesus said to Mr. Cool, “Faint of heart, what got into you?” (vs. 31) I’m guessing Peter learned from his lack of trust and never made the same mistakes or bad judgments twice.
Dear Lord, let me trust that you will give me enough faith to stay afloat on stormy seas. Amen.
