“Do a favor and win a friend forever; nothing can untie that bond.” Proverbs 18:19.
This weekend I needed a soul fix, so I drove to visit my friend Pat and her husband in central New Jersey. Pat and I met in Arizona and immediately bonded as soul sisters—truly a gift from God. When I visit her we mostly sit and talk and share deep inner feelings. We do not need to seek out adventures or go shopping. I returned home feeling as if I’d been on a mini retreat.
The more mature I become the more I need friends who can feed my soul and can be fed by my presence too. After my father passed away, Mother became closer to her friend Lorena. She grieved deeply when Lorena passed away. I believe they had become more than friends, soul sisters. But then a rich relationship developed with Mary, Margaret, and Millie. Mom called the foursome the three M’s and the O—O for my mother’s name, Olive. During the winter when she would spend a few months with me, she missed them because friends filled a gap that even a daughter could not.
I am grateful God created women to seek out other women as friends. Women need someone who understands how a woman thinks and to fill the gaps in her soul that in my opinion only few men can do.
Lord, thank you for the gift of friendships that form out of love for you. Amen.
