Sour grapes …

“Can you think of anything I could have done to my vineyard that I didn’t do? When I expected good grapes, why did I get bitter grapes?” Isaiah 5:4

imageGood intentions. We all have them, but sometimes they backfire. Years ago companies gave baby formula to mothers, and without proper education, many gave up breast-feeding or watered down the formula to stretch it. Babies suffered from malnutrition. More recently, F.E.M.A. provided mobile homes to flood victims, and with extreme heat, the indoor air temperature caused formaldehyde levels to rise. Children and adults became ill with serious respiratory problems.

The sour grape in the scripture above is the country of Israel. God planted the people, and they failed to live up to his expectations. He wanted a “crop of justice” and all he got was bitter grapes.

Dear God, remind us that from our mistakes we can learn how to improve the lives of people all over the world. Amen.
