“The Spirit of God whets our appetite by giving us a taste of what’s ahead. He puts a little of heaven in our hearts so that we’ll never settle for less.” 2 Corinthians 5:5
During my fall travels, I finally made it to the great state of North Dakota. It had always seemed a thousand miles away from Iowa. When I had the opportunity to take a bus tour to Minot, North Dakota, I signed up. I pictured the state as one big wheat field and was pleasantly surprised that there were trees, corn fields, well-maintained farmsteads, and well-kept small towns.
Sometimes we have a mindset of what something looks like and are pleasantly surprised. But I remember time times the expectations of a great place to vacation where the facility looks nothing like the pictures on the website.
What are your expectations for your eternal home? I picture it to be lovely garden where birds sing, bunnies run, where coyotes don’t howl, and people mingle with everyone, colorblind and without prejudice. I will find a comfortable place to allow my soul to float to new heights and an all-inclusive place where I won’t have to cook meals and can eat expensive steaks three times a day if I so desire.
The important thing is not what we think of our Heavenly home, but the journey to get there. Does it seem thousands of miles away because you are not close to God?
Lord, keep us close as the air we breathe. Amen.
