“John the Baptist said, ‘The real action comes next: The star in this drama, to whom I’m a mere stagehand, will change our life.’”
In today’s scripture, the stage is being set for Christmas. John the Baptist was part of the original drama that two thousand years later is still observed during the four weeks of Advent. As the people from Judea and Jerusalem confessed their sins, he baptized them with the disclaimer that he was only giving them a chance to turn their life around. It would be Jesus, and through his baptism by the Holy Spirit, that they would be changed “from the inside out.”
There isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t need to be reminded of our own baptism. Taking a shower first thing in the morning is a good place to start: Let the refreshing water penetrate against your skin, cleansing the whole body. As you dry off, ask God to wipe away sin of the heart and mind.
Dear Lord, thank you for the life-cleansing showers of forgiveness you so freely offer. Amen.
