Ezekiel saw images of God, four creatures with bizarre features. Each creature had wings with human hands, feet hoofed like a calf, and three faces of different animals and a human being–all looking like a blazing fire with tongues that shot fire back and forth. I have never pictured God to be like this image!
What I found interesting about Ezekiel’s image is that each creature had a wheel at its base that followed them everywhere they went. The wheels sparkled like diamonds in the sun and were circled with eyes. The wheels went in all directions, but straight, sticking close to their creature. Ezekiel said, “the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.” (vs. 21)
Sometimes I feel as if I’m like the creatures with many faces. I’m one person at home in which no one sees my vulnerable side. When I put on my “professional” face, I appear to be in control and confident. In the middle of the night, there are times I awaken and see in a mirror the face of doubt and fear. My happy face shows up when I’m doing the things I enjoy and when I feel God’s presence in my life.
Thank you, God, for revolving around us and keeping us safe in your strong arms. Amen.
