To wait or not to wait …

“Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute.” Romans 13:14

imageFor those who know me well, you will not be surprised to hear me say, “I’m either five minutes early or five minutes late wherever I go.” I hate to wait for meetings, worship services, dental appointments, etc. My mother told me once, “You have ants in your pants.” I didn’t get the “ants” from her! Mother’s good style is to build extra time into the schedule for arriving in case slow traffic, road construction, bad weather, etc., keeps her from arriving on time. And, she sits well while she waits–no wringing her hands or sighing.

The scripture for today is not about getting ready for church or an event. Apostle Paul says, “God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed.” (vs. 13). Paul didn’t want the people of Rome to spend their time during “precious daylight hours” by living outside God’s law. He wanted them to receive the blessings of God–especially God’s love.

Perhaps I will make a poster of Romans 13:14 and hang it where I can see it first thing in the morning while still lying in bed.

Thank you, Lord, for reminding us not to waste precious time in developing a relationship with you. Amen.
