“When it came close to the time for his Ascension, he [Jesus] gathered up his courage and steeled himself for the journey to Jerusalem.” Luke 9:51
Jesus wanted to get back to Jerusalem for his final days on earth. He made his plans and sent messengers on ahead to find places to stay. However, when they entered a Samaritan village to make arrangements for hospitality, they were turned away. Jesus went with Plan B–another path to Jerusalem.
As we travel around the U.S., we often call or write ahead and tell people we are going to be traveling through on a certain date. Frequently, we are offered a bed and breakfast or a meal. I can’t imagine the humiliation of being turned away, or flat out told, “You aren’t welcome here.” Grateful for the invitation, we usually decline the offer of a bed, we find that with our “senior” sleeping habits, it is more comfortable for everyone if we go to a motel. However, I never turn down a home-cooked meal!
Jesus lived for helping others, but he understood the people and forgave them for their failure to welcome him into their community. He set an example for us to move forward to our destination in life, to live for others, even if we come upon dead ends or road blocks.
Lord, you are welcome in my home! Amen.
