Two ears and a tongue …

“The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary.” Isaiah 50:4

imageHave you ever heard, “It’s no mistake God created man with two ears and one mouth”? That suggests we are to listen twice as much as we talk. For some of us (me, I’m referring to), that’s difficult, because I love to talk. My mother is spending a few weeks with me. We will have a talk-a-thon each day–perhaps we’ll even repeat ourselves, but we don’t care, because we love to listen to each other talk.

Years ago, I took Stephen Ministry training and was commissioned to serve as a care receiver–not a care giver.┬áIn the fifty-hour training, we learned how to listen to an assignee and how to use a well-instructed tongue to offer paths for one to think through their own situation. I often wonder how different our world would be if every student in school were required to take Stephen Ministry training.

Lord, thank you for ears to listen and a tongue to share loving words to the weary. Amen.
