What are your credentials for ministry?

“Show us your credentials. Who authorized you to teach here?” Matthew 21:23

Jesus was asked what made him an expert in the field of preaching, healing, teaching. He had no signed diplomas or certificates—just a humble beginning in a manger–authorized by his Father.

Folks with credentials and advanced degrees seeking employment often find themselves overqualified and have as much difficulty finding a job during times of recession as those considered under-educated.

I am grateful no one has asked for my credentials when contracting me to lead a retreat or before signing a book I’ve written. All I have is a stack of pay slips from twenty-plus years working in faith-based organizations and scars from the road of hard knocks. God took the rough diamond within my heart and soul and polished it so that I could inspire others through my ministry.

When God calls us into an area of ministry, we can trust God will provide the credentials needed, along with courage, adventure, and passion.

Thank you, Lord, for the opportunity to serve you without a hand-full of degrees and certifications. Amen.
