“He got up, took the child and his mother under cover of darkness. They were out of town and well on their way by daylight.” Matthew 2:13
Home values in the Phoenix area have been in a slump since around 2010. It became common for owners to abandon houses with mortgages “under water.” Many of these homes were sold in a foreclosure auction.
When the new owners took possession of the property, they often found furniture, clothing, toys, and even photographs left behind. One has to wonder if the family had to flee in the night for their own protection from creditors, or something worse.
Joseph was told in a dream to get out of Bethlehem, because King Herod had issued an order to have all baby boys under the age of two killed. In their haste to leave, they no doubt took only what they needed to get by while on the road. Fortunately, they knew they were protected by God.
Dear Lord, help us flee from danger in our own lives. Amen.
