“You Are Not My Boss!”

“No one elects himself to this honored position. He’s called to it by God, as Aaron was. Neither did Christ presume to set himself up as high priest, but was set apart by the One who said to him, “You’re my Son; today I celebrate you!” Hebrews 5:4,5 (The Message Bible)

No one likes a self-imposed boss. As a church secretary, I had many bosses—the pastor(s), personnel chairperson, other ministry staff, and some of the people sitting in the pew. The job surprised me daily, and one has to have a spiritual split personality to handle the stress of so many people asking, demanding, and requiring action “right now.”

The honored position referred to in Hebrews is one of a high priest that is selected among the people to represent matters relating to God. Being a church secretary was an easy task compared with the responsibility of being the leader of someone’s faith growth. When considering Jesus’ position on earth, I like the way the author wrote, “Neither did Christ presume to set himself up as high priest, but was set apart by the One….”

Dear Lord, help me refrain from presuming that I can be the boss of anyone in any matter. Amen.
